There are two types of medications:

- The 5-day pill after (120 hours)
The effectiveness of the pill depends on the time of taking it. The earlier it is taken, the more effective it is.
The main mechanism of action of both is to move ovulation by preventing fertilization. So it is not an abortion method, it does not terminate the pregnancy but prevents it.
Most women have no side effects after taking it.
There may be some side effects:
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Spotting (vaginal bleeding outside the menstrual cycle period)
- Headache
- The most common is a slight alteration of menstrual regularity (early or late).
False myths about the morning-after pill
- The morning-after pill affects the possibility of having pregnancies in the future. False! It has no effect on future fertility.
- The morning-after pill protects against sexually transmitted diseases. False! The pill does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, so if you have had a risky relationship, it is recommended to get tested for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia.
- If I take the morning-after pill, I am protected until the next menstruation. False! The morning-after pill is effective only for the relationship that has already taken place.
